An Art Therapy Session

An Art Therapy Session

July 26, 2023

Objectives of a Session

The objectives of an art therapy session include:

  • to develop one’s personality

  • to express oneself through art

  • to explore one’s emotions

  • to transform the negative

  • to use the benefits of art

  • to solve specific problems

Not every client comes to an art therapy session with a problem. Some clients just want to improve their well-being and quality of life. A few additional points can be developed during a session, such as self-esteem, quest for identity, courage and passion, self-control, and maintaining good mental health.

Anatomy of a Session

When and where a session takes place must be a place of freedom for the client. She/He must feel in control of their environment and be able to express themselves freely. The physical space should be inviting and have all materials that are needed to create. The client should be considered a unique individual who possesses the necessary resources and skills to deal with their problem.

Sessions then move into the actual work of the client and therapist together.

  • what brought them to seek out art therapy

  • identifying the client’s problem

  • setting goals to be achieved

  • relaxation exercises such as breathing or meditation

  • a warm-up such as scribbling on paper or drawing with your non-dominant hand

  • time to create, an activity the therapist chooses to help with the client’s problem

  • time for evaluation such as questions to help the client understand their creation and how it effects their problem

  • a conclusion period used for ending the session

Art Therapy may be done in groups or with an individual. Multiple sessions encourage continued growth in solving a problem. The therapist and client work together to decide a strategy that helps the client heal.
