Art Therapy and the Client

Art Therapy and the Client

September 4, 2023

In psychotherapy the client is the focus. The same is true in art therapy. When creating a piece of artwork the patient is focusing on their unconscious. That unconscious comes to the foreground, making it easier to think, face, and solve an issue or problem.

The Client

In an Art Therapy Experience the client is reassured that the session is confidential; that what happens during the experience is not shared or talked about outside the experience.

The session starts with time to relax, breathe, and bring their attention to the present moment. A warm up activity helps the client feel relax with using art materials.

Then the therapist will ask the client to focus on the issue or problem. When ready the client uses the art materials provided to create a drawing, painting, sculpture, writing, etc. that best helps them look at their issue.

What are your thoughts about an Art Therapy Experience? Is it something you might like to try? How might it help you? Please comment below. I would love to read about what you think!!!!

Have a thoughtful day!

The more engaged the client is in the process the more the client will get out of a session. No one has to be an ‘artist’. This experience is meant to be meaningful and thought-provoking for the client.
