Art Therapy Media and Activities

Art Therapy Media and Activities

August 2, 2023

Mixed Media

In an art therapy session you may use many types of media.

  • paint, watercolor, crayons, pastels, oil crayons, pencil, pen, acrylic paint, markers

  • sand

  • music

  • photography

  • dance

  • theater

  • clay

  • collage

  • role-playing

  • writing

Activities

Activities range from any and all of the media choices. The therapist usually decides what might be an appropriate activity for the client depending on their problem and goal.

For example, the client might sculpt with clay, move with music, create a collage of emotion words, paint a picture of themselves, or write a letter to a person they are having trouble communicating with. The list is endless. Each activity is designed to help the client solve, discuss, or look at an issue in a different way.

No activity is judged or expected to be a professional work of art. The idea of creating something is meant to help the client reach some kind of resolution with a problem.
