Stay Hydrated

As we get older our bodies change and that can affect your hydration status. Older people tend to have an increased proportion of fat to muscle and fat holds less water than muscle. This can lead to decreased water in your body.

Your thirst sensation diminishes as you age. You may no longer sense the need for water until you are dehydrated. Certain medications and conditions (diabetes and diuretic medications) can affect hydration also. Sweat gland activity decreases with age, affecting your ability to cool down.

Take fluids gradually. Try drinking water or juice and eating water-rich foods throughout the day.

Warning Signs that You May be Dehydrated

  • Fatigue/feeling sleepy

  • Achy or tired muscles

  • Dizziness or light-headedness

  • Feeling thirsty

  • Headache

  • Dry lips or tongue, sticky saliva

  • Constipation

  • Dark urine

Easy Tips to Stay Hydrated

  1. Choose water first. Water has no calories, fat, or sugar. Boost the flavor by adding lemon, orange, cucumber, strawberries, lemongrass, or sliced ginger.

  2. Each morning measure out how much you need to drink in bottles or pitchers. Sip throughout the day.

  3. Take a water bottle everywhere you go.

  4. Try fruit and vegetable juices, herbal teas, skim milk, coconut water, decaf coffee, and milk substitutes.

  5. Eat water-rich foods. Watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, strawberries, cantaloupe, zucchini, and celery are all top foods for hydration. Also broths, soup, and yogurt are good choices.

  6. Use an app to remind you to drink regularly and keep track of your intake.

Be proactive with your hydration. You will feel better.
