Waterways
Waterways are life-giving to our world. Without them, the world would not exist as it does. Rivers of water provide practical elements that are crucial for survival. They also are beneficial for well-being and offer settings for moments of mindfulness.
Flowing water is very soothing. Certain waterways are sacred, such as the Ganges in India or the Urubamba (considered a reflection of the Milky Way) in Peru.
Research about Benefits
Research has shown that spending time immersed in a river setting can bring genuine benefits, such as sparking creativity and helping soothe feelings of anxiety. Riverside walks help prevent a range of issues, including high blood pressure, depression, and chronic heart or lung conditions. Getting out into fresh air and green space, especially by the water, is a huge benefit to people’s well-being — mentally and physically.
Explore
Take time to explore your river more closely. Wear appropriate gear and stick to a designated trail. Walk slowly and allow your senses to fully open to your surroundings. What do you see, hear, smell, and feel? Look at the water. Listen to the sounds. Be mindful of your breathing. Observe the riverside smells and the sensations on your skin.
As you return to your riverside setting, notice how it changes with the weather and the seasons. Find a place to sit. Read a book or listen to your favorite music.
Escape
Escaping to a river can provide a break from worries, alleviating feelings of anxiety or stress. Get to know the water’s special energy and discover something new.
